Conditional
Introduction to Conditionals
A conditional is a grammatical structure used to express hypothetical situations and their outcomes.
There are mainly four types of conditionals:
- Zero Conditional
- First Conditional
- Second Conditional
- Third Conditional
Zero Conditional
In the zero conditional, we use the present simple tense in both the condition and the result.
Examples:
- If you heat ice, it melts.
First Conditional
In the first conditional, we use the present simple tense in the condition and the future simple tense in the result.
Examples:
- If it rains, I will take an umbrella.
Second Conditional
In the second conditional, we use the past simple tense in the condition and would/could/might + base form of the verb in the result.
Examples:
- If I had a million dollars, I would buy a mansion.
Third Conditional
In the third conditional, we use the past perfect tense in the condition and would/could/might + have + past participle in the result.
Examples:
- If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.
